5 Reasons You’re Not Sleeping Well

September 23, 2019 by Laura

If you find yourself waking up regularly feeling just as tired as when you went to bed the night before, then you lack quality sleep. A good night’s sleep is a critical part of feeling energized and healthy.

Although sleep may seem as simple as getting under the covers and closing your eyes, it’s not always that easy. There could be several reasons attributing to your poor quality of sleep. Here are some of the most common to take a look at.

Teeth Grinding

Do you ever wake up in the morning and have a headache, or teeth that feel slightly loose? The reason for your poor sleep may be attributed to grinding your teeth at night.

Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, occurs in as many as 2 out of 5 people. It is usually caused by an abnormally placed bite or missing teeth. It may also be related to sleep apnea, so it’s essential to stay aware of your symptoms. Wearing a mouthguard can help prevent tooth damage due to grinding.

Alcohol

A lot of people don’t realize that their innocent glass of wine before bedtime isn’t so innocent after all. Even though alcohol may help you fall asleep sooner, it inhibits you from being able to stay asleep.

Alcohol in your blood inhibits deep sleep, resulting in feeling exhausted in the morning regardless of how many hours you slept.

Even one glass of wine can interfere with your sleep cycles, resulting in unrestful sleep.

Body Temperature

If you’re a deep sleeper, you probably don’t even notice how cold or hot you are while snoozing. However, your body does notice. Sleeping in conditions that are too cold or hot ill result in less refreshing sleep.

Stress

One of the most common reasons for people’s lack of sleep is worry and stress. When you feel concerned about issues weighing on your mind, it affects your ability to fall asleep.

One of the best ways to reduce your stress levels is to take up meditation and deep breathing exercises. Even a few minutes a day of practicing stress-reducing techniques can have a significant impact on your stress levels.

Caffeine

The older that you get, the more sensitive you are to the effects of caffeine. If you have issues sleeping, it’s best to avoid any kind of caffeine afternoon. Otherwise, that post-lunchtime cup of java could cost you a good night’s sleep.

Chances are that at least one of these causes is attributing to your poor quality of sleep. By attempting to make changes in your lifestyle and staying consistent, over time, you can improve your sleep patterns.

If you still feel tired after taking action, then you may want to discuss your health with your doctor.
